Green Slate Trophies
Today I finally got round to updating the site for my mum’s trophy shop in burnley, four years after making a temporary page. Better late than never. Or is it?
Visit: www.greenslatetrophies.co.uk
As a result of my terminal laziness, the original site was hosted as “www.paulmaden.com/gst/”, with the url www.greenslatetrophies.co.uk redirected to it (hopefully as a 301, but I never did test it). Seeing as I now have the ability to host small sites without paying exorbitant hosting fees, I did the right thing and hosted the site properly.
So, what to do about the content? Well, it’s difficult, the vast majority of customers want to look around the shop and ask questions before buying, and almost all need their trophies/medals engraved or otherwise customised, so I don’t believe putting up an online shopping cart will be used by our customers.
How about simply adding a catalogue? Yes, it would help, but still require a huge amount of work. Being an independent business we source trophies and components from several suppliers, each with their own printed catalogues, and some with poor online sites where they’ve scanned in the catalogue one page at a time.
OK then what to do? Well, we could always take a load of photos from our own stock, especially from our own range of Slate Trophies. But that’ll take time, so…
I’ve replaced the old temporary page with a new temporary page, featuring a big new Google Map showing our location. The main body of the page is now drawn in flash, with the text content replicated “behind”, using swfobject for those without flash/javascript installed. I’ve also made slight tweaks to the text content of the page, purely for SEO reasons, e.g. we’re now “Green Slate Trophies in Burnley, Lancashire”.
One thing that’s missing are the opening hours, (9:30-4:30 Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, 9:30-12:00 Tuesday, Saturday,) these will be added in the next revision.
